I've been looking at the site organization overall, and I wonder if wargaming zines shouldn't be sorted separately from RPG fanzines. I'm especially looking at the following, which are currently in the "fanzine research" category:

International Wargamer, El Conquistador, Wargamer's Newsletter, Wargamers Yearbook, War Game Digest

(Miniature Warfare isn't properly a fanzine, it's a prozine)

Those really seem out of place given that the wargaming research forum contains Lowrys Guidon, Europa Magazine, The Wargamer, and so on. If I were shopping for a place for, say, Panzerfaust or SIM, I think they really fall more under wargaming than fanzine. By the end of their respective runs, there's no doubt that any claim they had to being 'fanzines', anyway, had long since been lost.

Thoughts?

Would you want them under the Wargames Category? That's fine with me. I'd really like that section to be the best it can be. Besides, it places them within the context of their creation.

Also, do you think periodicals should go under their own heading at the top of the Wargames forum or appear in the forum under publisher's category like everything else?

Basically, yes, I'd recommend that they appear in the Wargames Category. Delineating periodicals from one-time formal publications might have a few corner cases, but is pretty straightforward.

I also have a hard time thinking of any fanzines that really cross the wargame/RPG border, but that may be ignorance on my part. Hypothetically, those would remain in the RPG-related sections, I'd imagine.

While we are segmenting the wargaming zines from the fanzine research forum (RF), I am still compiling a complete list of all zines, newsletters, and other periodical titles into a single list. Please stop in for any suggestions for additons....

Trying to capture, well, the entirety of zine output is quite an ambitious task. Do you want, for example, every Diplomacy fanzine? You might very well double the size of your list on those grounds alone. I think you'd need to adopt some more modest scope to have any hope of achieving completeness.

That much said, there are inexcusable gaps in our current coverage of wargame zines, and the most prominent of the Diplomacy zines should also receive their due.

I'd say, yes, we should include all wargaming zines, even if we have to split them off for good and house them under the authority of the Wargames department. It is my hope some energetic souls will show up here and start filling out those areas of the site. There is always plenty of cyber-room.

Let em rip!

It's a very tall order. I switched my collecting emphasis a few years ago to give the Tome a chance at variety and scope. Now that things are beginning to take shape, I can relax a little bit (I already have, in fact). We really need serious and dedicated wargame collectors here to contribute their knowledge and collections. We also need the new collector, the kind who wants to give collecting a try. That point of view is just as valuable. There are new companies coming out all of the time. I'd like to see them here too. The goal, it seems to me, is to get as many people involved as possible. The Tome is about creating the opportunity for people to become involved. The material will come and keep coming long after our watch. That's the faith I have.

I've been at a bit of a loss as to how to attack this, but I imagine that the proper approach is an incremental one (if I can be forgiven for that zinger). This list is therefore exclusive of Diplomacy titles and related postal gaming zines, as well as transition zines between wargaming and RPGs like El Conquistador , The Space Gamer or GP2N, let alone The Strategic Review. I also exclude magazines dedicated to miniature collection and decoration without focus on wargaming, and thus no BMSS Bulletin, Dispatch or Milihistriot/Military Miniature Collector (against my better judgment, perhaps, I'll leave in The Vedette and The Fusilier).

As George Phillies once observed, there was an explosion in wargaming periodicals between the years of 1969 and 1971, but the number and girth of magazines quickly declined as groups consolidated and the initial fervor of the clubs receded. By the mid-70s, wargaming itself began to wane as its base migrated to the RPG community.

The scope of my listings here closes, chronologically as well as alphabetically, with Wargaming; no especial attempt has been made to index later additions. It is also fairly America-centric; there are no doubt UK publications neglected here. Although I'm sure this list is not complete, it's probably a decent start.
