The original C&S Society of Lake Geneva produced 14 issues of their house newsletter, the "Domesday Book". Copies of issues 4 thru 14 are verified and in the hands of serious collectors. But despite the intense interest in this magazine (some copies of which contain the very foundations of the D&D game), issues 1-3 have never been found in the last 35 years of searching.
An old friend of mine, an aging wargamer from that era, mentioned recently that he had a copy of #2, and would bring it to GenCon (August 14-17). I promised him that I would try to help find a buyer.
I will compile offers from those who PHONE me before the convention. I expect it to sell privately on Thursday 8/14 or Friday 8/15. Starting bid is 1000.00 $US (shipping & insurance complimentary). Broker's fee (i.e. for me) is 5%, paid separately.

Wednesday at the Acaeum dinner before GenCon Frank Mentzer stated it was at $5500. On Saturday another collector stated it sold for 5 figures. Not sure to who or the final price. I may be able to ask Frank waht the the final price was.

Unfortunately, we do not have any. There are very few in circulation. I suspect they look a lot like the IFW items as the Doomsday Book was simply a Castle and Crusades society offshoot of the IFW. _________________

Amazing! It seems like the prices in this hobby keep going up. Particularly for the rares or ultra-rare in this case. Anybody here the proud owner? I would love to hear more about the content.

Really which ones? (maybe that wargame one mentioned before at the Frog and toad?) Are there many more.. I don't think I can think of any RPG selated ones off the top of my head

Well yes, but I see that as a seperate collection issue... No purely rpg/wargame related? like the Doomsday (4 page!) thing.. I'm going to make a guess that Paul bought it or at least he was 2nd place...

A friend once told me that if a person pays $5,000 for a car, then it's a $5,000 car--to that person. Likewise, if two collectors want to spend $18K for a piece of paper, then it's worth $18K--to them. The desire of two collectors is not enough to establish the value of an item nor re-valuate the greater market. The real winners are the people who sold it.
Hopefully, similar items will make their way into the public market.

as with most things its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.. having said that I wonder if any of the people that origionally had one of them are kicking themselves now! I know I would be....

The only thing that could approach those sorts of numbers would have to be actual original manuscripts of the game itself. On the actual gaming side, that is. There are several works of art that would and have exceeded $18k, from my loose information. _________________

I haven't spoken to Paul in several weeks, but I'm not at all sure that he's the buyer, from various comments he'd made and things going on his life (home remodeling, etc.).
