Collectors arcana: This is the tournament version of the highly popular C1 The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan.
Very much like its sister Ghost Tower of Inverness this was played at a convention this one at Origins 1979
and sold in limited quantities of 300 numbered copies at the convention.
TSR would make a tourney dungeon to highlight the company at the tournament and playtest it prior to mass production.
Keep in mind TSR was merely a guest at Origins so it was in their best interest to make a good impression to meet expectations.
We all know they made an excellent impression with the later C1.
Author copies and referee copies are known to exist but generally do not generate much more value wise.
This tourney mod seems as though it was stored well by the original owners and usually resurface at EX to NM condition.
They were sold in Ziplock bags which was standard of the day.
Note that the color of the later numbers seems to be fading out. It is possible that the color was running out towards the end of the print run (thanks to Kynan Connor for this information).
"You are lost. You should never have abandoned the road and struck out into the marshes,
but the riders were close on your trail, and it seemed the only way. As you crest the knoll the sun disappears
below the horizon and the night comes whispering along.
Breathless you sink to the ground, grateful for a rest...somewhere behind you your horse neighs.
You scramble back to your feet and force your way further in to the brush and bracken, past great carved stones that
lie overturned on the ground about you. A full moon rises to aid you as you press into the dark. Ahead a light seams
to glow and beckon in the woods- perhaps a shelter for the night.
Though thorns tear at you and the thicket impedes your progress you finally reach that source of illumination...
you step out into the clearing. An ancient ruin - a truncated pyramid, enormous blocks of stone uprooted and thrown
down fills the ghostly courtyard, shining silvery in the moonlight, almost seeming brighter than the moon herself,
A refuge? Perhaps - on the morrow you may explore with the light of day to meet the perils of the unknown, but tonight you must have rest."
