If I didn't have one already I'd put a huge bid on it. It's like a deluxe boxed set. There are more 1st woodies around than this one.

Howdy Stephen,

Thanks much! I was gritting my teeth on how much that one was gonna' cost me d'oh!

They are not in the best shape, but at least they were complete. The provenance is probably the best feature of the item. It ties in neatly with RJK's recollection of having them at Gen Con VIII.

I also continue to be interested in the printing date for Tractics and those infamous horizontal woodgrain boxes (of which this one is). I think the date is pretty tightly tied into the August - September 1975 time frame for the publishing date of Tractics.

Futures Bright,

Paul

Agreed on those points, Paul.

Another thing that intrigued me was the seller's comment about the labels coming with the box as stick-ons. I hadn't heard that before.

He said he thought he put the stickers on himself because they were on the wrong side. In fact , the stickers are on the correct side compared to most woodgrain sets. It wasn't until certain, hybrid boxes and the white box sets that the label appeared on the correct side, i.e., the left side of the box.

Why is the left side the "correct side"? As with books, we have a tendency to put the front cover facing right on the shelf so that the spine shows. Boxed sets conform to this as well but Gygax and Co., not being professional printers, overlooked this convention. Thus, if you put a woodgrain on the shelf, front cover facing right, the spine is blank. Oops! Embarassed

FUtures Bright,

Paul

I don't know what the protocol is for listing one's own item for auction but not on the grand bazaar (eBay) but since the item is a very rare TSR item, I'll just make a short note here and the admins can delete it if it's inappropriate for the forum. I am privately auctioning the 10th Anniversary TSR D&D Pewter Chess set. PM if interested for details. Thanks.
William

It is OK to mention that you would like to sell something. This is a great thread for this. The idea was tossed about amongst us about making a classifieds forum for this purpose. Probably not a bad idea and could happen eventually as a service to our visitors if there is more interest. But right now, we are just focused on trying to find ways to get the community as interested as possible in research through sharing and recording.

Don't forget to take pictures and stats and add that Chess Set item to the research forums before you ship it away. Wink

It is not my area of expertise, but I would recommend adding this item to the 10th Anniversary Releases as a possibility. We can always move the research thread if necessary to a more suitably area.

Now we'll know what one is worth in the auction market:

Interesting bidding.
(And now eBay doesn't even tell you how long they've been registered for...).

I imagine it will join the 1st Woody, the 2nd Woody, and ST1 in $2K+ club.
