==============================

The Greyhawk Woodgrain release is a curious combination of a standard third print woodgrain (April 1975) and a second print Greyhawk (July 1975). What makes this release special are the three orange reference sheets that expand the regular reference sheets to include the Greyhawk material. The best guess so far is that the sheets were added to the D&D boxed set for those customers who had also ordered a Greyhawk. In the four samples of the orange reference sheets I have seen a third print woodgrain was always nearby. Two of these boxed sets are confirmed to exist in their entirety.

The box in this set has a horizontal grain with the bookshelf label located on the left side of the box. The seventh reference sheet is actually extra pages (17-20) from Men and Magic, complete with staple holes.

For lack of a /dis/, I'll tag this here.

Is that tally of four in addition to the incomplete set of sheets?

I know that's the comment RJK made a few days after the initial discussion re. "sending out with sets", but gut feel is stronger on the GenCon 1975 hypothesis with remainders being used up thereafter, perhaps, in regular mail-order.
At least two of the full sets are known to have come from GenCon (even if not 1974 per Tim Kask's comment) whereas dozens of non-GenCon 3rds have gone by on eBay with no hint of orange.

GenCon 1975 also ties in better with the transition from Graphic Printing to Heritage.

Still 02c, anyhow. :)
David.
